How to make Bleach

Bleach is a chemical compound that is typically made from chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide (lye). Here's a general overview of how bleach is made:

1. Chlorine gas is produced by passing an electric current through a solution of salt water (sodium chloride) in a process called electrolysis.

2. The chlorine gas is then reacted with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium hypochlorite, which is the active ingredient in bleach. This reaction is typically carried out in large reactors under carefully controlled conditions.

The chemical equation for this reaction is:

Cl2 + 2NaOH → NaClO + NaCl + H2O

3. The resulting mixture is then purified and stabilized with additional chemicals, such as sodium carbonate and sodium chloride, to improve its shelf life and effectiveness.

It's worth noting that bleach can be dangerous and should be handled with care. Chlorine gas is highly toxic and can be lethal in high concentrations, so it's important to follow proper safety procedures when working with it. Additionally, bleach should never be mixed with other cleaning products, as this can create hazardous chemical reactions and release toxic gases.
